We can ease the pain and discomfort of withdrawal
At SLOARC we feel treating withdrawal is extremely important. There is no reason to suffer unnecessary withdrawal symptoms. Some people think addicts should experience all the worst of withdrawal as punishment, to serve as a reminder of the consequences of drug abuse. This is cruel, ineffective and totally unnecessary. Addicts already suffer plenty as a result of their disease. There is no need to pile on more misery.
When you stop abusing drugs you have taken regularly your body complains. In the field of Addiction Medicine we discovered there are withdrawal syndromes for nearly all drugs of abuse. It is very important to obtain medical attention from experienced caregivers to oversee your withdrawal. It is best to treat withdrawal early with medicines to prevent serious complications and to avoid unnecessary suffering before it occurs. Some withdrawal syndromes are medically dangerous. Alcohol withdrawal can lead to delirium tremens (also know as the "DT's") which is a serious medical emergency requiring hospitalization. It is not uncommon for seizures (an electrical storm in the brain) to occur with alcohol withdrawal. Opiate withdrawal is extremely unpleasant (severe chills, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and muscle aches to name a few) serious complications can occur. Marijuana, amphetamine and other withdrawals each have specific characteristics.
